These individuals were attacked during the early hours of Saturday morning and required hospitalization due to their injuries.
The chief executive of Belfast City Council, John Walsh, expressed his deep condemnation of this unacceptable act of violence. He stated, "This was an unwarranted attack on three council workers, simply doing their jobs and providing essential services for our community. I fully denounce this behavior and encourage anyone with relevant information to assist the police in their investigation."
Authorities are actively seeking information related to this distressing event. Inspector Knowles reported that around 12:40 AM, they received multiple alerts regarding the assault on the three men, who were believed to be council employees. The incident occurred in the Little Donegall Street area, where the victims were reportedly attacked by two unknown males while fulfilling their duties.
According to the police, all three men engaged with officers at the scene, revealing they had been punched in the face and neck; one also sustained an injury to his hand. It was noted that an unidentified male approached the council workers and began verbally abusing them before resorting to physical violence. This individual was later joined by a second attacker, who also participated in the assault. One of the suspects was described as having a slim build with blond hair and wearing a grey tracksuit.
Following the attack, all three injured workers sought medical treatment for their injuries. The police emphasized that council workers play a crucial role in the community, and such violent actions against them while they perform their duties will not be tolerated. DUP MLA Phillip Brett reacted strongly to the attack, labeling it a "disgraceful assault" on individuals merely executing their responsibilities to serve the public.
