Bold claim: Chris Hemsworth confirms Thor isn’t exiting the MCU anytime soon and hints at exciting, unconventional plans for Thor 5. And this is the part most people miss: Marvel is clearly steering the God of Thunder toward a fresh, more dramatic evolution after Doomsday.
Chris Hemsworth has been a fixture in the MCU since 2011, debuting as Thor and delivering a mix of towering highs (Ragnarok, Infinity War) and occasional missteps (The Dark World, Love and Thunder). Now, with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, the character is set for a reset. The upcoming film is expected to reframe Thor as a more serious force under the guidance of the Russo Brothers, a shift signaled by the Thor-centric Doomsday teaser.
During a conversation on the SmartLess podcast (covered by The Playlist), Hemsworth hinted that he has a few more appearances in store beyond the next Avengers movie, and at least one of those will be Avengers: Secret Wars.
“It’s been so much fun,” Hemsworth said. “What I’ve enjoyed most is the tonal variety. Working with Taika Waititi on some films and with Kenneth Branagh on others, then collaborating with the Russos—each project has offered a different tonal approach.” He added that the Russos gave him room to explore different performances, likening it to changing his tattoo designs: a constant urge to try something new.
Hemsworth noted that Kevin Feige has observed audiences now expect dramatic shifts from Thor. “Whatever we do next, we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be different.”
When Hemsworth looks at the source material, Thor’s evolution across the comics shows endless potential—and he cautions that Thor must be handled carefully. He reflected on the tonal gamble of Ragnarok (a bold, playful pivot that paid off) versus Love and Thunder (which leaned into absurd humor and drew mixed reactions).
The future remains open, with multiple creative trajectories inspired by lasting comic-book lore. If Hemsworth’s comments are any indication, Thor 5 is very much in development, even as Doomsday and Secret Wars move forward under the guidance of the Russo Brothers and screenwriter Stephen McFeely. Michael Waldron, who helped helm Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is also contributing to the project’s evolving vision.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for a December release, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. The overall direction suggests Thor’s next chapter may draw from a broader array of inspirations, offering fans a familiar hero with a newly minted, cinematic edge.
