Ghana's New Prisons Officer Cadets: A Step Towards Reform and Rehabilitation (2026)

Bold new steps in reform: a fresh batch of Ghana Prisons officer cadets is being commissioned as part of ongoing modernization efforts. Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stood alongside Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to officiate the graduation and commissioning ceremony for Officer Cadet Course Intake 32 at the Prisons Officers Training School on Tuesday, December 2.

The Vice President reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the Prisons Service with highly trained personnel and the necessary resources to fulfill its mandate effectively.

During the event, she announced a policy enhancement: increasing the feeding allocation for inmates from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00, a move aimed at promoting more humane treatment within the prison system.

In addition, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang introduced the Think 360 Degrees Prisons Initiative. This program seeks to blend humanitarian goals with development objectives, focusing on officer and inmate welfare, advancing agricultural mechanization, providing vocational training, and creating sustainable employment opportunities that also generate revenue.

A central objective of the initiative is the successful reintegration of inmates back into society.

Speaking to the graduates, the Vice President urged the new cadets to uphold integrity, discipline, and dedication as they join the senior ranks of the Ghana Prisons Service.
