"30 Minutes of Turmoil": A Giant Shark Captured Near the Site of a Tragic Incident

Recently, a fishing team succeeded in catching an enormous bull shark in Sydney Harbour, very close to where 12-year-old Nico Antic tragically lost his life due to a shark bite earlier this month.

This impressive creature weighed around 150 kilograms and measured approximately 2.5 meters in length. It was captured on Tuesday afternoon, just about 20 meters from the shore at Clifton Gardens, located on the northern side of the harbour.

On board the fishing vessel named Reel Trouble was a crew that included Mark Judge, a well-known former associate of bikers, along with his friend Chris Allchin and nine-year-old Micky Harlow-Davies. The atmosphere on the boat was described as chaotic yet thrilling. Mr. Allchin, who is also a business and marketing coach, detailed to news.com.au how he was the one who managed to reel in the massive fish, albeit with assistance from his companions, during what he termed "30 minutes of absolute chaos."

"This isn’t my primary hobby; I’m not an avid fisherman. My friend frequently invites me out for fishing trips, but I often find myself caught up with work commitments," he admitted.

"However, I thought, 'Why not? Let’s give it a shot.' This was my first experience being strapped into a harness and tethered to a fishing rod while wrestling with a 150-kilo shark. It was quite intimidating! They possess immense strength, and I had two friends holding onto me to ensure I didn’t end up in the water with the shark!"

Photos shared online showcased the gigantic shark hanging next to the crew, highlighting how its size exceeded that of the men from nose to fin.

Mr. Allchin explained that their objective was to catch a bull shark, driven in part by the recent attacks in Sydney, including the heartbreaking incident that claimed young Nico's life. Nico was bitten while jumping off rocks outside the safety nets near Shark Beach in Vaucluse on January 18, and his family sadly announced his passing six days later in the hospital.

Interestingly, this incident was one of three shark attacks recorded within a mere 26 hours along the coastline of Sydney, with two of these incidents occurring on the northern beaches.

"We did drop some berley to the ocean floor and waited for about four hours before experiencing those frantic 30 minutes of action," Mr. Allchin recounted. "While the attacks may have been a minor motivation for us, we were fishing quite close to where that young boy was, unfortunately, attacked and later died. We could actually see the area from our location across the harbour, aligning directly with it. Hence, our mission to hopefully catch a bull shark turned into a reality."

This particular shark, which is estimated to be between 18 to 20 years old, has been generously donated for scientific research purposes. Emily Hunt, a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, who is involved with the Department of Fisheries, was called to the wharf to collect samples from the shark. In a video capturing the moment, she stated, "I’ve got swabs for my PhD studies, focusing on foraging ecology among various sharks and analyzing how their diets are affected by climate change."

Chris Allchin, an entrepreneur, openly discusses his past life of crime, which resulted in a five-year prison sentence—a period he now regards as a significant turning point in his life. He expressed that it was, in fact, "the best thing that could have happened to me."

Having been friends with Mark Judge since their school days, Mr. Allchin noted, "We both lived very different lives back then... lives that we have moved beyond. I can assure you that I have changed, and he confirms he has too, which is crucial for me. If they’re around me, you can bet they’re no longer involved in that lifestyle."

What do you think about the motivations behind the fishing expedition and the discussions surrounding shark behavior? Do you believe the recent shark attacks should alter how we approach marine activities? Feel free to share your thoughts or disagreements in the comments!
