The Return of Silk Road's Bitcoin: A Controversial Tale
Imagine a cluster of Bitcoin wallets, once associated with the infamous Silk Road marketplace, suddenly coming back to life after years of dormancy. These wallets, allegedly linked to Ross Ulbricht, the pardoned creator of Silk Road, have moved millions of dollars' worth of Bitcoin, sparking curiosity and raising questions.
But here's where it gets intriguing: these wallets, labeled by blockchain experts at Arkham Intelligence, were once brimming with a staggering 442,000 BTC back in 2012. Today, they hold around 416 Bitcoin, valued at a whopping $38.25 million. On Tuesday, they made their first move in at least five years, sending 33.7 BTC, worth approximately $3 million, to a fresh wallet address ending in "z7ga54".
Conor Grogan, a Coinbase director and on-chain analyst, connected at least one of these wallets to Ulbricht back in January. Grogan's assessment highlighted a wallet ending in "WoPx1", containing around 90 BTC, worth nearly $9 million, which has remained untouched for over 14 years. He also identified around 430 BTC spread across dozens of other wallets linked to Ulbricht, emphasizing how these "dust" wallets from years ago have grown into significant holdings with Bitcoin's rise.
Grogan shared his findings on Twitter, stating, "I found ~430 BTC across dozens of wallets associated with Ross Ulbricht that were not confiscated by the USGovt and have been untouched for 13+ years. Back then these were probably dust wallets, now, collectively, they are worth about $47M. Welcome back Ross."
The reasons behind these transactions remain a mystery, but if they are indeed connected to Silk Road, they could still be subject to seizure by the federal government, according to experts. Around the same time, a U.S. court approved the sale of $6.5 billion worth of Bitcoin that had been seized from Silk Road, highlighting the ongoing legal complexities surrounding these assets.
Ross Ulbricht, who served over a decade in prison for charges related to narcotics trafficking and money laundering, was granted a full pardon by President Trump in January. He expressed gratitude to the Bitcoin community for their support during his time behind bars, speaking at the Bitcoin 2025 conference a few months later.
