A wave of controversy hit Michigan football on Wednesday, as Sherrone Moore, just hours after being fired as head coach, was involved in an incident described by dispatchers and police audio obtained by TMZ. The recordings portray Moore as allegedly “suicidal” and wielding a knife in the moments following his termination.
TMZ published a clip that runs under a minute, assembled from dispatch and police audio and originally sourced via Broadcastify. The Detroit News has filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain the same dispatch recordings for independent review.
Moore remains in Washtenaw County jail as prosecutors review the case, with a court appearance anticipated in Ann Arbor on Friday after Washtenaw County officials decide on charges. Local police confirmed Thursday that Moore is expected to face arraignment in the near future.
The initial 4 p.m. dispatch call to a location on Ann Arbor Saline Road involved officers from Saline, Pittsfield Township, and the University of Michigan. This response occurred just before Michigan publicly announced Moore’s firing over an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
According to the TMZ audio, at least two people, including Moore’s wife, described the situation to dispatchers, with one account stating Moore was “suicidal … for losing his job today.” The audio also includes a report from another individual who claimed Moore had “been stalking her for months” and, in a separate instance, that Moore “walked in with a knife.”
Moore, 39, is married with three young children and resides in Ann Arbor. He had served two seasons as Michigan’s head coach and spent eight years on the staff before the university terminated him for cause. At the time, Moore had three years remaining on a contract that paid him more than $6 million annually.
