Contaminated Wet Wipes: A Public Health Crisis
The recent outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis infections linked to certain wet wipe brands has raised serious concerns among health authorities and the public alike. This deadly bacteria, found in the environment, can cause severe complications, especially for those with weakened immune systems. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have issued warnings about the ongoing risk associated with using these contaminated wipes.

The bacteria can enter the body through contact with contaminated products on broken or damaged skin, or through medical devices like intravenous lines. Symptoms include redness, swelling, increased pain, warmth around a wound, and pus drainage. In severe cases, it can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to an infection.
The outbreak has resulted in 59 confirmed cases of Burkholderia stabilis infections in the UK since June 2018, with five deaths and one probable case. The affected products, which were not marketed as general use wet wipes or baby wipes, have been withdrawn from sale. However, the UKHSA emphasizes that the overall risk to the public remains very low, and affected products have been withdrawn from sale.
The contaminated brands include ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free, Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, and Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes. Health experts advise against using these products under any circumstances and recommend disposing of them immediately.
